We take in aquatic turtles until we have
arranged for a new home for them. The mediation is cost-free for
all parties concerned, that is that the new owners do not have to pay
for the aquatic turtles handed over to them and that the old owners
do not have any costs. But you can transmit us a gift an
our bank account, if you like, but this is voluntarily, of course.
We take care of the turles, including medical care, if necessary.
If you have any questions
regarding housing, keeping and sickness of turtles, do not hesitate
to write us a mail (verein@wasserschildkroete.de), we will answer them
within a day.
Basic
rules for the care of aquatic turtles
Each aquatic turtle (adult) needs at about 300 litres of water (this
is also the minimum quantity for two adult turtles, as they should not
be kept alone) in a heated water basin ( 86 degrees Fahrenheit for the
water and for the air is an ideal temperature for aquaturtles up to
10 cm, for larger turtles 82,4 degrees Fahrenheit are necessary). Please
note: below 82,4 degrees Fahrenheit the turtles may catch a cold which
may soon become pneumonia. Keep the turtles warm and they won't get
sick. The lower the temperature, the weaker the immune system. The ideal
temperature for digestion is 91,4 degrees Fahrenheit.Place three glass
panes on the aquarium at night. At day remove the glass pane under the
UV light bulb and switch on the bulb. Aquariums which are not covered
at night lead to a cold and pneumonia of the turtles because of the
temperature difference between the room temperature and the aquarium
temperature.
A cold/pneumonia can be recognized when the following symptoms occur:
swollen eyes, pink or light pink plastron. Then visit the veterinarian
and ask him to inject 1 ml Doxyhexal (this is a fluid containing 100
mg of Doxycyclijn per 5 ml fluid) under the skin of the thigh. The turtle
gets gets another injection with the same dosis after two days , a third
injection after another two days, the fourth injection after another
two days and the last injection after another two days. During these
injections and two months afterwards the turtle should be kept at 91,4
degrees Fahrenheit for recuperation. Without these 91.4 degrees Fahrenheit
no recuperation is possible because the turtle needs the warmth to get
healthy again.
Separate males and females. The males bite the females and this causes
stress and lesions.
A ZOOMED Powersun
HQI UV light bulb above land area is necessary; under the UV-lamp a
temperature of 100,4 up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit should be reached.
You also need an external filter with a capacity of five up to
seven times the volume of the water basin, i.e. if you have a
water basin of two hundred liters for your turtles, the filter must
have a capacity of 1000 litres. The fourth part of the water must
be changed weekly. The turtles need a land area where they can sit under
a heat lamp which has a distance of 30 cm to the turtles (UV A and UV
B is necessary for the self-production of vitamin D3; without extra
UV bulbs they will get rachitis, a deficit of Vitamin D3 which leads
to a weakening of the bones and to a deformed shell and even to death).
An infrared bulb is good for turtles, but the exposition of the aquatic
turtles to the infrared light should not exceed two hours per day and
the distance to the turtles should be at about 50 cm. An oxygen pump
is also necessary because the useful bacteria called Nitrobacter which
live in the filter and which help to filter the water need oxygen. The
basin/aquarium must be heated with a heater rod.
The land area can be constructed with cork, for example. The cork can
be glued to the sides of the water basin with special silicone used
only for this purpose. It is also possible to have a land area made
of glass. This is more hygienical than cork which rots and which should
be therefore exchanged after two years. Stones and roots lead to a pollution
of the water and lots of algae. The water basin can be decorated with
non-toxical plants like papyros.
The turtles like sweet water fish,
dried fish and and pellets, but no cat or dog food. Cat and dog
food is cheap, but causes gout. Salt water fish is hardly digestible
for aquatic turtles, as they live in sweet water. Some species like
bananas and salad, especially Pseudemis floridana and Pseudemis concinna.
Some swamp turtles like can swallow food at land, in contrast to aquatic
turtles which need water to swallow the food. Beef heart should not
be fed to often as it reduces the calcium level of the turtles. They
especially need vitamin A, D3 and E, which can be either applied to
the fish as a powder mixed with calcium. These vitamines are essentially
for the aquatic turtles because the prevent illnesses of the eyes and
of the caparax (deformations).
It is dangerous for the health of the aquatic turtles to leave them
in the garden pond in winter because the European winter is twice
as long as the American winter (most aquatic turtles sold are American
species). Turtles left in the garden pond for hibernation get pneumoniosis
or are prey to rats. Make sure that the aquatic turtles cannot escape
into the garden and that there are no toxic plamts in the area fenced
in for them around the garden pond. Artificial hibernation, as hibernation
in general, is definitively not necessary for the fertility of the aquatic
turtles. Asian aquatic turtles cannot be kept in the garden pond even
in summer because the climate in Asia is much hotter than the North
or Middle European climate.
It is recommended to take
care of the origin of the sweet water fish that is feeded to the aquatic
turtles - Danish sweet water fish is treated in general with antibiotica.
This remedy is used in large-scale fish breeding because the fish get sick
because of of lack of space to move. The meat of sweet water fish treated
with antibiotica is weak and tasteless, and the aquatic turtles get sick
more often because the antionbiotica the fish was treated with weaken their
immune system. The antiobiotica kill useful bacteria in the intestinal tract
of the tutrles. Therefore sweet water fish bred without antiobiotica
should be preferred, i.e. from small or private breeding in the mountains
or in rural areas.
